Since 1995, every fourth Tuesday of February is World Spay Day, raising awareness about spaying and neutering pets in 74 countries around the globe. And February is Spay and Neuter Awareness Month, just in time for the annual dreaded event rescuers call ‘Kitten Season’ in many parts of the country.
It all started thanks to Doris Day and the Doris Day Animal League. But the day is more than an annual event. It’s an ongoing call to action every day, all year long. Today, the need to raise awareness is greater than ever.
As Bob Barker knew, spaying and neutering is the best way to ‘help control the pet population,’ which results in at least three million cats and dogs in shelters each year, almost half of which are tragically euthanized.

Considering how much it prevents needless suffering, improves the quality of life, and dramatically extends the lifespan of cats, it’s a serious topic (see more in the video below). But as we know, a lighthearted approach goes a long way to further awareness.
By raising awareness in a funny way, people are open to find out more. Hopefully, they decide to get their pets spayed and neutered! These are just a few of the memes we saw that might make you chuckle. There are also many hilarious names for a kitty’s ‘trouble nuggets,’ which rescuers are fond of using for the big Spay or Neuter day. It helps make the experience more bearable – for everyone!
